Running the RS-232

This document describes controlling a Siglent instrument from three different applications

Many newer computers (like mine) ship without any Serial ports but are equipped with multiple USB slots. A number of vendors have USB to serial converters (I’m using a OIKWAN unit with a built FT232RL chip). After downloading the FTDI driver it was time to connect to the instrument.

The application opens with this screen

       Need to select Serial Option

Then configure the serial port

Open the application and a blank screen shows up

IMPORTANT:

Putty DOES NOT send either a Carriage Return(CR) or Linefeed (LF) when the Enter key is pressed. Pressing a CONTROL J at the end of a line will send what is called a terminating character

Sending the command *IDN? (with the inserted (CNTR J) Is often a great way to begin.  NOTICE THE Carrot and J termination

AccessPort

This serial application (AcceessPoint 1.37) can be downloaded from the download section of:

https://www.usconverters.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=15

After unzipping and installing, the application is installed as an .exe file

Clicking on the .exe file will bring up the request screen asking if the application can change the PC. After allowing the application to change the PC   The opening screen will appear

Clicking on the configuration port lets you set Com port parameters

Press open and the control panel opens

NI Measurement and Control

MEASURE and Control Opens to show com port is available

Click on the Open Visa Test Panel and the Input Output

Notice the \n entry on the Command line

More Notes:

· A loop-back test provides (connect the TX to RX pin) one way to check operation of the serial port.

· When the USB-Serial converter is plugged in computer should beep – like a printer
