Running Instruments from USB

Many of Siglent’s instruments can be programmed or controlled from a USB Connection. Siglent’s family of EASY software(s) demonstrate the use of instruments from a USB. These EASY software(s) assume the computer has VISA installed.

VISA is a software standard describing the movement of information between applications and hardware. Many instrument vendors have VISA versions available – one of them being National Instruments. You can download VISA from their web site

https://www.ni.com/en/support/downloads/drivers/download.ni-visa.html#558610

To operate from a USB interface, Siglent instruments communicate using the USB Test And Measurement protocol. These devices use the ausbtmc.sys file which is loaded with National’s VISA.

With VISA installed correctly, when a Siglent Device is plugged in or removed from a computer’s USB port, a windows Beep is heard (much like inserting or removing a printer or Phone)

Troubleshooting the Connection

Here are some notes to consider if there are problems

– Is the instrument plugged in and powered ON?

– Is the USB port configured properly on the instrument? Some instruments feature USB ports that can be configured as TMC (Test and Measurement) or Printer communication ports. The USB port should be set to USBTMC or similar for remote control. See the instrument user’s guide for more information.

– Try a direct connection from the instrument to the computer using a short USB cable (if the cable has RF chokes, even better). USB hubs or long cables may cause issues.

– Try a different USB cable

– Try a different USB port on the computer

************** More Advanced Techniques **************

1) Verify the ausbtmc.sys is in the system

One Path to the file is with windows explorer

This PC> C:>Windows>System32>drivers

2) – On machines running Windows, check the Device Manager. Test instrumentation icon(s) should appear/disappear as USB Test and Measurement Device (IVI) is connected/disconnected

3) Open Device Manager, Right Click properties

Display Information about the IVI properties and find driver details

should see the installed driver

Continued trouble shooting

Return to the previous screen to update driver

Finde the driver
